  2. Old Houses
    In former times it was all thatched houses that existed in this district. The thatch was got from the wheat and rye grown locally. The walls of the house were made of mud. The height of the walls was from about eight to ten feet, and the width was four feet at the foundation and two feet at the eave.
    A bed was placed at the side wall near the fire. This was called a settle and it was used as a seat by day while at night it was opened out and used as a bed. The chimney was made of stones and mortar and sometimes brick and mortar. There are no accounts of houses having no chimney or
