  1. Long ago there lived an old couple named Paddy and Norah O Kirwan. They had been married for seven years but had no family to claim their property, which consisted of two acres of land, a cow, two goats, and a good store of money. One evening as Paddy was coming home from a neighbours house he met a little grey woman near the churchyard who saluted him very kindly and asked him if there was anything troubling his mind. "Not much" said Paddy, "but I should like to have a son to claim my little holding and to close my eyes when I'm dead." "Your wish will be granted" said the little woman. To the surprised of everybody a son was about a year afterwards born to Paddy. It happened that Paddy was planting spuds in the field in front of the house when he heard the news and so pleased was he at the glad news that he fell dead
