   like a basin and open on top. The nest is made of straw and mud mixed and lined inside with grass and feathers. The swallow lays from 4 to 7 eggs, of a white colour with red-brown marks. She rears three broods while in the country. In early October, they leave for Africa. Shortly before they leave, they can be seen in swarms on the hedges and trees singing.

   The house-martin.
   A bird like the swallow but has white feathers on his tail. He arrives in this country the middle of April. They fix up the old nests they had the year before and lay their eggs in them. They make their nests under the eaves of houses, of wet mud. The nest is closed all round except a small hole, where the bird can go in and out. There is a lining of soft grass or moss on the inside of the nest. The house-martin lays about 5 eggs, of a white colour. There are no spots on her eggs. The house-martins leave Ireland early in October.

   The black-bird.
   The black-bird, is of a black colour, with a yellow beak. She builds her nest in a tree or a bush, of grass, moss and wool. There is a lining of soft, fine grass inside. The black-bird lays from 4 to 6 eggs. They are of a bluish green colour, with brown spots on them. She makes her nest early in Spring.
