- Local Bures
Long ago when a person was sick, it was a very
rare thing to call in the doctor. The people used
use their own cures. They had cures for every disease
I often heard this before but I never heard the
cures they used have until I asked my father a
few months ago.
When a person had corns on their
feet, they did not look for ointment to rub to
them like people now-a-days do. They got up
early in the morning before sun-rise and walked
through the dew on the grass. This was supposed
to be a very good cure.
The cure for chilblanes was to
get a raw, purple, onion and rub it to them
The cure for a cough was to boil onions in
water, strain them, and preserve the water. then,
sweeten the juice with sugar and drink it.
The cure for burns was to get
a lizard, rub him to your tongue three times and
you would be cured. The cure for boils was to
pick "penny leaf" peel it and heat it and put it
to the boil. Other cures for boils were to but
a poltice of white bread out of boiling water
to them or a poltice of linseed meal.
The cures they had for whooping
cough was to over and under a donkey nine(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
