    taught in English. The names of three of the books used are, Read-a-maid-aisy (Reading-made-easy), the spelling book and the double spelling book. Writing was also taught.
    There were no desks in the school, the pupils wrote on their knees. No copies were used and no pencils or pens. Slates and slate pencils were used.
    Each child brought two sods of turf for a seat. No blackboards were used. No one knew what a blackboard was at that time.
    No maps were used nor did the children learn Geography at all. The man who taught in James Deignan's never worked in any other school. He taught there and resided in his father's house.
