Some time ago people put a porringer on a calf when it would be a few days old, to keep it from eating hay. My grandfather, John Walsh, did this; some people do it still. And calf my grandfather put a porringer on, he was sure to die. If my grandfather was out late that night he would hear the moaning of the calf going along by the Deerpark Wall and up to the Shegorn Wood, but there would be an image of a calf left in the barn. He never put a porringer on a calf for years before he died, and the calves all lived.- Collector
