  1. St. Martin was drowned in a mill-race. For this reason no mills work on St Martins Day (11th November)
    About seventy years ago, at Ballisodare the flour mills were kept working by order of the foreman, who defied custom. The workmen refused to carry on, and he locked them in the mill. The mill took fire and the men could not escape, most of them jumped out of a window into the river. All the men, except one were lost by fire or drowning.
