1. Churning

   I have a churn at home. It is four feet high, and two feet wide. Its sides are round shaped and it is fifteen years of age. It is made in two parts. The upper part is called the "crib" and the part underneath the "bottom". It is built with oak boards, and is put together with hoops. There are no marks on it except where the crib and bottom are joined together. In olden times the people used to churn every other morning. Nowadays they churn twice a week. Every member of the family helps in the work if they are present. Strangers who come in during churning help in the work. It takes an hour to churn. It is done by the hand. The churn dash is always kept moving at the end it is kept at a rolling motion. Cold water is poured in in the Summer and hot water in the Winter. Water is put in to separate the milk from the butter. The butter is lifted out with a vellel for the purpose. The butter milk is washed out of it and it is salted to taste. The butter - milk is used for feeding calves
