borrow three days from April to skin the old cow and the cow will probably die after that. The twelve days after Christmas are supposed to represent the twelve months of the year as regards weather. If it rains on St Swithin's day it will rain for forty days. The farmers like to have all their potatoes digged before Halloween - thirty first of October. People believe that if March begins stormy it will end mild and if it begins mild it will be wild towards the end. They have a rhyme which says "If March comes in like a lion it will go out like a lamb". People do not get married in the month of May for they say "marry in May and you will rue the day".
