- "Travelling people" still call to our home but they do not ask for "the night lodgings" as formerly. They now live in Caravans in the by-roads. My Grandmother - Mrs. John Mc Mahon of Killeen, Gortatlea told me that they are the descendants of the old stock namely Coffeys, McCarthys, Sheridans, Callaghans. They are not very poor. The Coffeys and McCarthys are tin smiths and the Sheridans and Callaghans help horse dealers to buy and sell at fairs. It is said they sometimes make 10/- or £1 in the sale of one horse.
They see a great many small articles especially the women folk and people in backward country places buy from them. They make some of these articles themselves and get others in large "fancy ware" shops in towns. They cook their own food by the roadside. They expect money as alms, eggs, a piece of bacon, old clothes + books, and at times a saucer of meal or flour and milk. They travel generally in families and in bands.
