- Former times the houses were built of slime and mortar and thatched with straw. The floors were made of mud; the chimneys were made of stone and mortar and some of them were made of clay; the fire-place was situated at the gable-end. Most of the houses had no chimneys but there was a hole in the rood which allowed the smoke to get out. A bed placed in the corner of the kitchen near the fire was called a "pouch". In some cases there was no glass in the windows but bags stuffed with hay did duty for the glass. Half-doors were very common then but not so common nowadays. The fire made of turf and wood burned brightly on the hearth.
