In olden times also they scooped the turnips to the inside, and eyes, mouth and nose were shaped in it and a lighted candle but standing in it and left on a wall on a dark windy night and when the wind could blow, the turnip would shake also.

Homemade Toys At present the childern amuse themselves by making chains out of daisies chains and rowan berries. This is how they are made they chain them by means of a needle and thread. They mix ivy seeds with the rowan berries and put them in on a double thread. The young boys made tops out of spools. They peel each side of the spool and put a thin pointed bit of a stick through it. They also made bird cradles out of bootrees. Across the centre they put a thin sally. Underneath the sally is a shaped stick called a fork and a tricker. When they bird hops on the sally the cradle falls down and the bird is captured inside. There are certain snares used for catching hares and rabbits. This is how it is made they sink a thick bit of a stick down in the
