- (continued from previous page)Long ago the people used to cook a cow's head, boil it, and then take it to the smith as a gift. I often saw my uncle's ass getting shod.
- The fairs in my district of Collooney are generally held in the towns. Traders often transact business in farmer's houses and on the roadside. Long ago there used to be a fair held in Tubberbride once a month but it was discontinued because it was far away from the stations.
The fairs now are always held in towns. When an animal is sold a luck penny is given to the buyer. When bargains are made they hit one anothers hands. A red mark is put on the animal's back when sold.
When the animal is sold the halter or rope is retained. The biggest fairs of the year are the October fair and the March fair. Horses and cattle are sold in the same fairs. - The local fairs held are Collooney, Ballymote and Ballisodare, they are always held in towns. Buyers come to my district of Doorla and buy cattle, sheep and pigs mostly.(continues on next page)
