- a lot of fort are to be seen around my district of Tullybeg in the parish of Riverstown and the Barony of Tirerill. They are mostly called forts. There are two in Tullybeg, one in Tullamore, one in Carrowenn and one in Doonally. The one in Tullybeg is facing the one in Tullamore. They are circular in shape and have a fence of earth about them. There is no entrance in any of them.
The early people are supposed to have built them to save them from the wild animals. The fairies are supposed to have gone to them after the battle with the Milesians. No one plougs them or interferes with them as it is said anyone who touches them will have bad luck. The fairies in Graham's fort in Carrowenn used to pass to Doonally fort.
A house was near the pass in which two families lived. In one part an old woman and her son lived and in the other part a married couple and their baby lived. One night as the boy was coming from visiting a neighbour's house he saw the child been handed out on the window. He took it and brought it into his mother and she kept it.
Next day there was a great fuss when the young woman got the child dead. All the neighbours went to see it. After some time the old woman went in and told the man that she could give him back his child. He only laughed at her but she went in and got the child and showed it to them they said it was their child. The old woman told the story how the son got it. She took up the other child and it turned into a stick, they burned it in the dung-pit and they say it(continues on next page)- Collector
