to be properly burned. Then it is drawn from the kiln and is fit for use. The only kilne continually burning at present and selling lime for use are at Ballincolohery, Ballintocher, and Ballymcelligott.

  2. There are three forges in this parish but the one I know best is in Fortwilliam and the smith is Tim Canty. The forge is built on the side of the road and is near the roads leading to Causewayad Ardfert and Ballyheigue. The roof of the forge is made of wood and the door is about ten feet wide. There is one fireplace in the forge. The implements he uses are an anvil, a big hammer, a small hammer. pincers, a rasp, a chisel, and a vice.
A bellows is made of leather with a wooden handle made of ash. The bellows is at the back of the fire and when the smith wants to light the fire he works the handle up and down and the wind gets at the fire and lights it.
There have been generations of Cantys who were smiths and the forge is built about one hundred years.
