  1. About ninety years ago the orange-men around Carrigallen held sway .
    They were assisted by the "black" protestants from the manor in the Co. Cavan; this name they got on account of their bigotry; they called the catholics "papists" and often beat them very severely. At last the catholics could not stand the treatment any longer. They gathered in great numbes from Aughavas, Drumreilly and Carrigallen. These three parishes united their forces and marched into Carrigallen on a market day knowing that the Protestants would be there as usual.The fight between these two forces was long and fiercely contested; some of the orangemen carried swords but the catholics rushed to O'Neills forge and armed themselves with long iron bars which they got there. With these long bars of iron in their hands they were more than a match for the protestant swordsmen, who broke and fled before them. Both sides had some killed and many wounded. The catholics won the battle and chased the orangemen out of town. At this time there lived at Newtowngore an orangeman nicknamed " Billy the dog" . On market days in Carrigallen he would put his stick in the
