You folks of this nation give ear to my tale
That I'm going to write if my pen doesn't fail.
Concerning a wake, that lately took place
In the town of Drumshambo near Aughnaglace
On this simple oration I mean to disclose
How Dudley Gallagher straightened his toes.
II
He got the death summons, he had to resign
To the merciful hand of His powers divine;
But whilst living the best of pipe- music he played
To boot was an artist, a tinker by trade,
And when at his dying he made a request
As some of our readers may count it a jest.
III
It's true as I mention without a mistake
'Twas to have a musician to play at his wake,
And when as a boon the people complied
He stretched out his members that moment & died.
His wife with uneasiness she ran to his bed;
She Kissed with blind grief the back of his head.
She roared "Ueela Murder" she shouted "mo Leun"[?]
Who will solder my kettle or tea-pot again?
But this generous old man was possessed of no scorn
He never offended no more than the baby unborn.
With this and each talk the evening passed by
And the night it came on without one word of a lie.(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Faisnéiseoir
