  1. Once upon a time a man named Felie McCabe and his wife lived beside Drumerkane fort. Felie was a nailer by trade and he came into possession of his house, forge and garden in the following manner: there were three farmers who lived in the district and they agreed to give him this piece of land upon which to erect his house and his forge on condition that he would make a set of hob nails for each of them yearly as rent for his house and garden.
    He did a good trade and made a good deal of money but as the story goes he was always as busy as a nailer. When his family grew up they emigrated to England. Some years after the last of his family emigrated he got ill and died. There lived near the forge a man and his wife named Pat and Molly Cavanagh. They were poor and Pat went every year to Scotland to do the harvesting. Molly was left to care her family of five who were very young. When the corn ripened Molly had no one to reap for her but herself. She had to stay in the house during the day to mind the children as she couldn't bring them to the corn-field, as the sharp stubbles would stab them in eyes and face.
