    A small group of Donegal tenants who had grievances similar to those of Stephens met and discussed the situation.
    The result of their deliberations was that to save their wives, daughters and themselves, the tyrant would have to be put to death. An attempt was made to shoot him previous to this. He was fired at from the window of a house, now occupied by Mrs. Gordon wife of the late vet, Mohill:
    An ambush as planned with Stephens as leader. On the 2nd April 1878 L. Leitrim set out in his coach from his castle near Milford, Co Donegal, accompanied by a bailiff named Meehan and his driver. Another car, in which were Lord Leitrim's valet and another bailiff followed. As was usual the whole party was armed. At Cratlow Wood or Gortha Wood Stephens and his men (among the men were two other ex-British soldiers) lay in ambush.
    The first volley from the ambushers took effect for all three in the first car got wounded. Unfortunately one of the ambushers got his thumb blown off through his queen Anne bursting. The driver was killed instantly. The bailiff made an attempt to run back to the second car, but dropped dead having run only a few yards. Lord
