opposite Whitecastle about three quareters of a mile from the main land on the Inishowen side. The "Garland" struck the schooner just amidships. The force, the size and the eight of the steamer turned her into a crashing wreck. It is said when they struck that the sound could be heard for miles around.
Thinking that the schooner was going to sink immediately twenty of the harvesters jumped overboard and were drowned.
The rest of the harvesters all of whom came from West Donegal were put ashore at Cabry. The "Garland" hurried on her course, and the schooner was run on a bank on the Co. Derry side of the channel before she had time to sink.
It was said that the captains had a spite at each other and that the accident could have been avoided if only more care had been taken.
