There are many superstitions about May Day.
In mostly all places farmers would never
like to sell milk on May Day. They'd consider
it unlucky, and they used to be afraid that
their milk and butter would be taken.
The person who'd buy the milk could get the power
to take the butter.
It happened in this district (Littlecullenstown) that a
farmer sold milk wan time on May Day. He sold it to a neighbour who he knew well,
and for months after, when he'd churn, there
was nothing in the churn but only a small
bit of white butter, and you couldn't
look at, let alone to ate it, with the
smell that was from it.
Skimming the Well ~~~ I often heard of
"skimming the Well" on May morning.
A person would go out at break of day on
a May morning; she'd have a kind of an
instrument, a vessel of timber, or
a piece of a stick, and she'd skim the
