  1. Long ago in the townland of Derreentunny, Corrigeenroe County Roscommon there was a hedge school held in an old house the ruin of which is still there. The master was a stranger by the name of Farrell. The school was held in a farmers house. The master lodged in the house. He got a penny a week from each scholar and some oten meal and potatoes as well. The children were taught geography, arithmetic, grammer, algebra, and geometry. Subjects were taught trough English. Writing was done on slates with chalks.
