  1. There was a school in Thomas Gibney's barn Dungimmon Mt Nugent, Co. Cavan. John Plunkett owns it now. The pupild used to sit on straw mats woven by hand. They wrote on framed slates. No one, (would) except a good scholar, would be allowed to write with a pen.
    There was another hedge school in Pat Orwell's field Lower Dungimmon, Mt Nugent, Co. Cavan. Nernard Mc Donnell owns the field now. Mr Donnelly was the teacher. The pupils used to sit on stools. They wrote with quills. They were taught English and if a pupil spoke Irish the teacher would put a black mark on his face.
