    There was a school in a farmer's house in Ballydaly by the name of Whelan. The name of the teacher was master Healy. They called it Ballydaly school. A lot of children used to go to the school. It was called a hedge-school. The children were taught indoor. The teacher was a stranger. He came from Dublin. The teacher lodged in the farmer's house. He was paid by the pupils. The subjects that were taught were reading, writing, sums, and painting and drawing and the girls were taught tambo work. No Irish was taught by the teacher. They were all English books that were used The pupils used to write with a quill on a piece of paper and they used to write with a stone on a slate. They used to stand around the teacher and at intervals they used to sit on the ground. There was no blackboard used. The teacher used to stay about two years, and then change to another school and another teacher would replace him.
