Cows are fed with hay and mashes. These mashes are made with about two pounds of crushed oats, one double handful of meal, four pounds of mangolds and a double handful of beet pulp. This beet pulp is made from the remains of the beet which is left when sugar is made. After a cow calves she is kept in the house and is given warm drinks with bran mixed to prevent her from getting cold.Philip Parle (Walshestown)
