    splits across in rows with about ten inches between each row. Men with shovels put the clay up on the ridges. When the potatoes begin to come up they are "scored" again and men shovel up the clay on the ridges. Spades are often used instead of ploughs. They are used in rocky land, in small corners, and by poor people who have no horses or plough. The spades are bought.
