  1. There is an island in Lough Ree known as Quaker Island or Seven Church Island. There were seven churches in it. Six or seven hundred years ago a big whitethorn bush grew in one of the old churches. There was a very wet year about a hundred years ago and there was no turf and some people went to get timber on the island. They went to cut this bush and when they were a short time cutting it, it began to bleed and they had to go and leave it. There for some years after it grew and some more went to cut it and it bled again and it is to be seen there yet.
