  1. There was an old school in Foss about a hundred years ago. It was in an old forge belonging to John Gerety of Ledwithstown. It was roofed with iron. The name of the teacher was Mary Farrell. There was no blackboard in it. There was a piece of an ordinary board in it & the teacher used to write on it with a piece of lime. The children used to sit on blocks of wood x write with goose's quills & ink made of elder berries.
