   The first houses built by the ancient people of Ireland were of the timber kind. The poles were driven into the ground and then crossed so as to form a roof. The first roof was made from the branches of the trees, and then some scraws were placed on these branches; and over all straw or rushes were laid over the scraw. This was called the thatching.
