  1. In the year 1845 and 1846 the potato crop failed and there was a great famine, so tht in 1846 and 1847 the people died by tens of thousands of starvation and fever. Noble efforts were made by thousands of Englishmen individually to save the famishing peasantry, but the government took no sufficient measures and fully one fourth of the people of Ireland died of famine and disease during these two years.
