    that a man by the name of Mr. Cahill taught in this hedge school It is said that this teacher was a stranger. The teachers used to lodge in houses near where they were teaching. Grammar, History, Geography, and English were taught. Irish was not spoken by the master nor pupils. The writing was done on a slate with a slate pencil. The pupils were seated on planks and no blackboard was used only a sheet of black paper hanging on the wall. The teachers remained for about a month in each district.

  2. There was a hedge school in a field owned by James Kennedy townland of Rorardstown, parish of Drom, Co. Tipperary. A large oak tree grew there, under this school was held. An Dullán was the local name for it. A barn was situated near this tree. The children used to stay in it for the winter. They stayed outside in the summertime under the shade of the tree.
