    every week. The children were taught, Arithmetic, Grammar, Reading, Geography, History and Writing. Irish was spoken by masters and pupils. It was through Irish all the subjects were taught except the English Reading. The teachers did their best to teach the Irish language. English and Irish books were used. Nearly all the pupils had books. Ink, made out of elder berries and quills were used. They also wrote on slates with slate pencils. In a circle on stones around the master they used to sit. A big slate fastened to the wall for the master to write on. He also had a couple of small maps. Some parts of the year the teachers went to other hedge schools.

  2. Hedge schools were the names in which the children were educated long ago. There was a hedge school in one of Johnny Troy's fields in Kivilcorris, townland of Rathleasty, in the parish of Drom, Co. Tipperary/ In winter the children were taught indoors and in summer they were taught in the open. It is said
