- Long ago it was the custom that all Irish people should wear shamrock on Saint Patrick's Day, because when Saint Patrick was explaining (to a king) about the Three Divine Persons a sprig of shamrock sprang up at his feet.
If an old man met another man, he asked him if he had his "Patricks Pot" yet. This meant had he a "pint" yet that day. If he had not, both would have one then.
Both boys and girls wore harps and rosettes made of green ribbon; men wore shamrock on their hats also.
