There was a great epidemic of influenza in 1918 and a good many people died in this district. Ireland experienced a great drought in 1887 and it also experienced another in the spring of 1938. There was an old saying February "Fill dyke" but this year it was quite the opposite. "March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb" but it was the summer weather this year April was hard and dry by day and frosty by night and there was an old saying "Soft April showers bring forth May flowers." The drought began in February.
