    Daniel O'Connell passed this road, and the people asked him to give them something. Next week there was a notice sent to them that there was work down at Lough Key, building piers. The people went down, but they were not able to work; so weak were they with hunger. There was a big tank erected in Boyle then, for boiling Indian meal, and the women used go and get some for the men, for they had nothing else to live on. The men got only 1/3 per week for their work at Lough Key.
