- (ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)No, no, the sergeant says, he is but listed fairly,
Tomorrow morn, he will march with me
Ad that will be right early.
To Newry, I was marched to pass the head inspector
I passed their doctors, every one they could find
The height that I listed for, five feet seven inches,
i was there, inches every one, i was full five feet eleven
In the learning of my exercise the weather it was warm
I thought my very heart would break
When I thought of sweet Lough Erne
They placed a stock upon my neck
On my body a steel jacket
And every time I would turn around
The red blood would from me flow
At 3 O'clock in the sentry box
When the guardroom it was silent
I left my gun and bayonet down
I scaled the wall and made my way
i was bound for sweet Lough Erne.
I had scarce been one mile out of town
When i heard the drums a beating,
To my surprise I looked around
And saw five hundred men appearing,
I threw myself in ramper deep
Where the green grass it spread around me
They all drew nigh and then passed on
But they never spied poor Kelly
At 12 o'clock upon that night
I reached my father's dwelling
I gave a knock to their surprise
oh who is that my aged mother cried,
Tis your only son come home
a bold deserter boy.
For six long weeks and six long days
I lay there under cover
The seventh week in sickness lay
and in the 17th was buried my poor father
saw the last of his child
and likewise did my mother
So now I bid the world adieu
And wish I never took the shilling
