  1. A Song (continued)

    In ancient Mucker's wide domain

    (continued from previous page)
    IV
The Abbot turned his every thought
    To ancient Churchill's hallowed spot,
Mullandoe - where Heaven had willed.
The Saint his Abbey fair should build.
Soon o'er the fosse within the dell.
Rose cloister, choir and hermit's cell.
And fast the fame spread far and wide.
    Of Muckno's Abbey - Maeldoid's pride.
Here lonely monks long watched and prayed.
Where first their vows to God were made.
Here too the scribe and learned sage.
Pored o'er the ornate vellum page.
Tull often in the twilight dim.
Was heard the peaceful vesper hymn.
While o'er the lake each sabbath morn.
The Abbey chimes were softly borne.
And lowly Kerne and chieftain proud.
In prayer before God's altar bowed.
And when o'er Muckno's icy wave.
    December winds would wildly rave.
    And Winter's all enshrouding snow.
Would tint thy sword - Mullandoe.
The joyful peal of Christmas bells.
Would echo through thy answering dells.
