- Long ago in this district there were people who made candles. This is how they made them. They had a pot of melted resin on the fire. They got strips of calico and rolled them round to form the wicks. Then a piece of the calico was dipped into the resin, and it was rolled on the smooth side of the hand bellows or a board to make it round. Then another piece of the calico wick was dipped and so on until the candle was long enough. A piece of calico was left hanging at one of the ends at which it could be lighted. About forty years ago an old woman called Mary Mac Guinness lived in a small house in Tullyharnett and she made candles in this way. Our teachers father often went to see her make them and used to help her.
