    The first school my father attended was the Convent of Mercy, Roscommon.

    My mother attended Camphill School Collooney. Mrs. Rooney was the teacher, she never taught any Irish. They used to write on slates and knit with quills. The school hours were from 9.30 a.m. to 3.30 p.m.

    My father went to school in a place named Cainey...

    My father went to school in a place named Carney in the barony of Carbery, parish of Drumcliffe and Co. of Sligo.
    The school was situated about a quarter of a mile outside the village of Carney. It was a mixed school.
    There was no Irish whatsoever taught in the school during his time about forty five years ago.
    Each scholar brought a turf each morning for the fire in winter-time.
