  1. Once upon a time their lived a giant upon Union Rock. This Rock is situated about half a mile to the North East of Collooney and gets its name from Union Wood in which it is situated. The top of this rock can be plainly seen over the tops of the highest pine trees which grow in this wood.
The people in the district around were terrified of this giant. He stole all their cattle and horses and destroyed their crops. To amuse himself, he took big pieces out of the rock and threw them about. One of these pieces is to be seen to this day in Cloonmacduff, a distance of about half a mile to the East of Union Rock. Another of these pieces hangs over the river at Ballysadare about a mile to the North West of the Rock.
One day a young lad heard of these the doings of the giant and he dug a large hole (square), which he covered over with moss. Next time the giant came to steal the cattle, the hole was prepared for him, he fell into it and the lad killed him and rid the people of a pest.
