“After Ballinamuck in '98 Lord Cornwallis came to this counrty and came as far as Carrick-on-Shannon...”
After Ballinamuck in '98 Lord Cornwallis came to this country and came as far as Carrick-on-Shannon. His soldiers were let loose on the people and they tormented them as much as they could. A great many prisoners were gathered into Carrick and Cornwallis gave orders that 10 men were to be hanged.
"Dont hang more than 10 men says he"and on a Sunday morning the 10 men were hanged in Carrick. The place where they were hanged is known by the name "Gallows Hill" ever since.
