It is said by the old people that birds had power of speech in the time of Our Lord. When the Holy Family fled into Egypt the soldiers of Herod were looking for them in Jerusalem. Some of the soldiers met a robin and asked it to tell them if it had seen the Holy Family but it would not answer them. They caught it and killed it. After a while the same soldiers met a wren and asked the same question. Then the wren told them all he knew.
After this Our Lord did not like the wrens and that is why boys hunt the wren on St. Stephen's Day.
