    by. He heard a splash in the water, and he thought it was a fish. He saw a beautiful mermaid swimming towards him. Just then a whiff of wind came, and swept his washing into the centre of the lake. He saw the mermaid putting the clothes on herself. He ran away as fast as his legs could carry him. Mermaids are caught in the fishermen's nets, and brought to shore, but they throw them out to sea again.
    It is said, that a certain family living near the shore became very intimate with the mermaid. She often played with them, and carried them in turn, on her back out to sea. She taught them how to dive an swim.
