   Lucan is so called because of its elm-wood; it is the place of elms. There is still an elm-wood in the district (Leamcán - "elm growing place.")

   Ballyowen Castle is one of the many ruins of castles which are still to be found in various parts of Ireland. According to tradition this castle was inhabited by the Danes, in fact it is said to have been built by the Danes. Now there is a dwelling house built in the castle grounds. It is now the property of Mr. C. O'Brien Ballyowen Lucan, Co. Dublin. This house in the grounds was occupied by a man named Mr. Gerahty during the Penal days. This man had a brother a priest who
