- Long ago the woollen mill in Lucan was an iron factory, it was owned by Mr.Gladstone and there spades, shovels, forks and hoop iron was made. It was the first place iron was made in Ireland. The first steel boat to sail successfully on the Liffey was made in Lucan Iron.About seventy years ago Mr.Thornberry had a churn and he churned twice a week and they also had a glass churn and they had often to place the crocks before the fire to get it sour.
They also sent their wheat and oats up to the lock to Tom Ennis, Lock road, who had a pedal mill and got the wheat ground(continues on next page) - Collector
