   It was there we first learned to read and to write,
   To renounce what is wrong and to do what is right,
   We worked with ambition no fear of the rod,
   For its seldom 'twas used in the School at the Rock.

   With light hearts we could face our exams every year,
   For with such a teacher there was nothing to fear,
   Every face there could smile at the inspectors knock,
   For excellent was the watchword in the School at the Rock.

   In hundreds in Ireland we have such national schools,
   In all the same programme and in all the same rules,
   But not one has a teacher so loved by its flock,
