  1. One particular hedge school existed in Derryronane. It belonged to Mr White and it was situated where Quinn's granary is now. Some of the ruins are still to be seen. This teacher was a granduncle of Bridget White of Derryronane, Swinford. He wore a short breeches a flannel waistcoat and long stockings. His pupils wore petticoats made from flannel also. His wages were a penny a week from each of all his pupils.
    He used to go to the house of a friendly scholar and stay there for a couple of days. Barns were used particularly. The master got these barns free and fire material also. The chief subjects were-: Latin, Irish, English. The pupils wrote with quills
