  1. He told me there was a hedge school where Paddy Quine, Derryronane, Swinford is living now. Mr. White, Derryronane was teaching there. He was Bridget White's granduncle and lived in the village all his lifetime.
    Every pupil had to pay one penny a week to be taught. He went around with every bad pupil to teach them and get his lodgings free. They were taught Irish, English and Latin.
    In the Summer they were taught in the open air. There was writing in these schools. The children wrote with a goose quill.
    The parents were glad the children to know Irish and any parent
