In making a churning a dash is required for the old churn but is not required for the new one. The dash has a long handle, a little thicker than the handle of a shovel. The head of the dash is round and has a circumference of about 30 inches. In the head of the dash there are 3 large holes the shape of a shamrock. The lid has a hole in the middle which allows the handle of the dash to pass up and down. When churning, the lid is placed about 2 inches below the upper edge of the churn. The dash is moved upwards and downwards.
