  1. Country boys and girls with very rare exceptions up to the age of twenty and over had neither boots nor stockings, they trudged (all) along in their bare feet as a savage does in his native country.
    As time went on a little glimmer of prosperity peered through poverty.
    A few girls in a country [?] would be provided with a pair of new boots and a pair of wool stockings of a rough class.
    The boots were made by the local shoemaker, heavy leather was used in the upper soles.
